Your Target Country
France is my target country and I know quite a bit about their system because my knee popped out of place on one of the main staircases at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The story is a bit cringey for some people but funny for me because security mentioned free health care. However, that's not entirely true. French universal health care covers 70% out of %100 of necessary treatments, doctors appointments, and hospital stays.
Are hospitals free in your target country?
This is broad. It truly depends on the circumstance. If you're a low income citizen who has to stay in the hospital then yes. However, expats and residents have muelle. This is a type of insurance for immigrants , permanent residents, etc. It covers the other 30% of that insurance. However, you're still paying for insurance.
Is there insurance required for traveling? If not required, would you purchase insurance? Does your own insurance at the moment cover you abroad?
Yes there is. I'm not aware of the insurance my program CSUIP is offering because I'm waiting for the paper work. But I do know that la care does not work abroad.
If you get seriously sick while being a student abroad, would you prefer to stay in the target country or return home?
I would prefer to stay because the medicine is more advanced. My knee surgeries were performed using a European method not fully approved by the U.S. yet.
If a close family member/ relative has a medical emergency or terminal disease while you are abroad as an exchange student or on a work permit, would you choose to complete your commitment abroad or return home?
While family comes first, I would complete it because I know they would want me to. They would want me to live my life and keep working hard. I would always make a way to visit , even half way across the world. My grandma is currently fighting dimentia but I'm still going to go to France because she wants me to have opportunities that Black women didn't have back then. She wants me to live the life she dreamed about. Plus, I call my grandma almost every day anyway.
Have you ever been abroad and fell sick? How did the situation developed? Were you pleased with treatment? If this never happened to you, do you know anyone in that situation? Same questions apply if you are answering based on a third party experiences.
When I was in Spain, my mom had shoulder problems from an injury. The flight tickets were non refundable and I ended up researching English Speaking Doctors in Barcelona.
