E-Journal 4: Language & Culture/ Novel & Film Selection (Updated)

I have found a few movies that peaked my interest. Some are romantic, some are romantic comedies, and some are tragic because the French love a good tragedy. As for books, I wanted to go the thriller route. I ended up looking into more activism books and books on the every day lives of French women.

Fixing France: How To Repair A Broken Republic by Nabila  Ram.  This book is about the structure of the French government and the history of it. Followed by how we got where we are today and how to make substainible lives for minorities.

The New Parisienne : The Women & Ideas Shaping Paris

by Lindsey Tramuta

This is a collection of interviews from women of all walks of life; consisting  of breaking stereotypes.

Guillame Musso is a  best selling author in France. I'm interested in two of his books.

Central Park (2014) - This is about a well respected  Parisian cop who wakes up on a bench in central park with no recollection of the night before.

The Renunion (2018) - Another best selling book by Musso is about how a prep school girl goes missing after a scandalous love affair.

Eiffel 2021-  A romance movie about the iconic Eiffel tower.

I Am Not An Easy Man 2018- A movie about toxic masculinity. The man is a womanizer who fell into an Alternate universe where women are in charge.

A Cultural Observation Of "I Am Not AN Easy Man"

  • I inferred that French Women having bad hygiene is a stereotype and that women are expected to shave everything. There was a scene where Damian is judged for having chest hair, referencing a woman not shaving.
  • Sexual Misconduct in the workplace is an ongoing problem, while there is a law that pushes for immediate dismissal of the perpetrator; most rape cases are not brought to trial.
  • The idea of Traditional Masculinity is widely accepted.
  • There's an unfair narrative about the clothes a woman wears. Apparently, it's considered 'for the streets' to wear skirts in grocery stores in France. Which is why the boy got cat called by women in one of the scenes.
  •  I compared the generalizations of  gender roles  in this movie to the same generalizations in The Barbie Movie. Intersectionality isn't discussed because it's far too broad to  be discussed. Thus, making it a different movie entirely.
